The third generation 2016 Mini Convertible has been officially revealed and will be seen in metal for the first time at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show this week.
The all-new model doesn’t see a drastic redesign and retains the basic Mini character. There are subtle revisions though. The new generation model looks now more expressive with the changes similar to its hardtop version. Nine metallic, including the new Caribbean Aqua metallic, and four-non metallic body paint choices will be offered. The interior too, is in line with the hardtop version.
The third generation Mini Cooper Convertible is 3,821 mm long (+98 mm), 1,727 mm wide (+44 mm) wide and 1,415 mm tall (+1 mm). The wheelbase has also grown to 2,495 mm (+28 mm), while the track width has been enlarged by 42 mm at the front and 34 mm at the rear. Thanks to the increased dimensions, entering the car is now more comfortable and there’s longer seat surface for rear passengers. Moreover, the luggage volume has been increased by 25% to 215 litres with the closed top and 160 litres with open top.
For the first time, the soft top is fully electric and so, quieter too. The fully automatic soft top can be opened and closed on the move at speeds of up to 30 km/h. The sliding roof function does not have a speed limit. The roof can also be operated via a button on the remote key when the vehicle is stationary. It takes 18 seconds to open or close the roof. For the first time, there’s an option of a Mini Yours soft top that features a Union Jack Graphic.
The UKL platform-based all-new 2016 Mini Cooper Convertible will be available with four engine options. The standard petrol model is powered by a 1.5-litre MINI TwinPower Turbo turbocharged three-cylinder engine that produces 100 kW (136 hp) and 220 Nm (230 Nm with overboost function) of torque. Transmission options are a 6-speed manual and 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. The 0-100 km/h acceleration time and top speed figures are marked 8.8 seconds and 208 km/h respectively for the manual transmission and 8.7 seconds and 206 km/h respectively for the automatic transmission.
The 2016 Mini Cooper S Convertible will be available with a 2.0-litre MINI TwinPower Turbo turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 141 kW (192 hp) and 280 Nm (300 Nm with overboost function) of torque. Transmission options remain unchanged – 6-speed manual and 6-speed Steptronic automatic. The 0-100 km/h acceleration time and top speed figures are marked 7.2 seconds and 230 seconds respectively for the manual transmission and 7.1 seconds and 228 km/h respectively for the automatic transmission.
The 2016 Mini Cooper D Convertible will be available with a 1.5-litre MINI TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that produces 85 kW (116 hp) and 270 Nm of torque. Transmission options, yet again, are a 6-speed manual and 6-speed Steptronic automatic. The 0-100 acceleration time and top speed figures are the same in case of both transmission options – 9.9 seconds and 195 km/h respectively.
