The 2016 BMW 3 Series eDrive’s plug-in hybrid powertrain features a combination of a 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine that produces 135 kW (184 hp) and 290 Nm (214 lb.-ft.) of torque and an electric motor that generates 65 kW (88 hp) and 250 Nm (184 lb.-ft.) of torque. The eDrive plug-in hybrid system churns out 185 kW (252 hp) and 420 Nm (310 lb.-ft.) of torque in total. This power is sent to the rear axle via an 8-speed Steptronic transmission that is located behind the electric motor.
The electric motor is powered by a 7.6 kWh battery which is made of lithium-ion cells and located underneath the boot. The U.S.-spec 2016 BMW 330e can be driven up to approximately 22 miles (35 km) in pure electric mode. With the full tank filled and fully charged battery, it can be driven up to approximately 370 miles.
The plug-in hybrid variant with great efficiency, offers impressive performance too. 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) can be reached in just 5.9 seconds, which is 0.1 second slower than the 328i.
The 2016 BMW 330e goes on sale in the U.S. market in Spring 2016.
