Honda has released the full specifications and pricing of the tenth generation 2016 Honda Civic for the U.S. market. The all-new model will go on sale in mid-November and be available in five trim levels – LX, EX, EX-T, EX-L and Touring.

The 2016 Civic is designed from the ground up and has an all-new vehicle architecture. The vehicle has dimensions of 182.3 inches, 70.9 inches and 55.7 inches in length, width and height respectively; the wheelbase is measured at 106.3 inches. These measurements are more than the outgoing version, except for the height that has been reduced by 0.8 inches. The wheelbase gains a good 1.2 inches which gives the 2016 Civic more cabin space.

The exterior design looks sleek and aggressive with a swoopy profile. The fascia gets projector headlights with LED DRLs; the top-end Touring trim level features LED headlights also. The chrome plated ‘Flying-H’ grille adds a distinctive touch, with the bumpers gaining large air intakes. The sides see prominent wheel arches and sharp character lines along with a sloping roofline. The rear portion conveys dynamism with a large windscreen, short overhang and sporty-looking C-shaped LED tail lights that are standard across the range.

The body itself is made of 59% high-strength steel and 14% of ultra-high-strength steel, which represents an increase of 4% and 13% respectively over the 2015 model. The ACE body structure give the Civic enhanced collision performance in a more compact front frame. The curb weight has reduced from 2,868 lbs to 2,795 lbs.

The interior is also completely new and sees usage of high-quality soft materials for a premium appeal. The all-new Civic gets a lot of firsts which include remote engine start, electronic parking brake, walk away door locking, dual-zone automatic climate control, adjustable driver’s-seat thigh support with 14 degrees of tilt, heated front seat backs, heated rear seat cushion and rain-sensing wipers.

Starting with the EX trim level, there comes a 7-inch touchscreen display that is used to control audio, HVAC functions; it also supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay making way for integration of supported smartphone features such as app-based navigation and access to supported apps.

2016 Honda Civic cabin

The 2016 Civic is powered by two new gasoline engines that also includes a turbocharged unit seen under the hood of the Civic for the first time. The two options are the 2.0-liter i-VTEC naturally aspirated inline-four unit (that does duty in the LX and EX trim levels) generating 158 hp and 138 lb-ft (187 Nm) of torque at 4,200 rpm, and the 1.5-liter turbocharged direct injection inline-four engine unit producing 174 hp at 5,500 rpm and peak torque of 162 lb-ft (220 Nm) between 1,800 to 5,500 rpm. The 2.0-liter engine is available with both the 6-speed manual as well as the CVT automatic gearbox; mated to the manual, this unit has a combined fuel efficiency of 31 mpg (13.17 km/l) and with the CVT transmission this figure increases to 35 mpg (14.88 km/l). The fuel economy figure of the smaller and more powerful 1.5-liter turbocharged unit married exclusively to the CVT automatic is marked 35 mpg (14.88 km/l).

Safety has also been given special importance with the availability of Honda Sensing safety and driver-assistive technologies on all trim levels. This system uses millimeter wave radar and a monocular camera to sense and respond to detected road hazards, it comes with many technologies such as Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) with RDM, Forward Collision Warning (FCW) integrated with CMBS, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low Speed Follow, Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS) and Road Departure Mitigation (RDM).

2016 Honda Civic 1.5 turbo

Honda says that full body air leaks have been reduced by 58% over the outgoing model, making for a quieter and refined cabin. This has been made possible by incorporating acoustic glass front windshield, triple door sealing, new hood seals, sound-absorbing heat baffles and body undercovers, new rear wheel house liners and formed fiber carpeting.

The all-new Civic has sportier handling owing to the 25 mm wider track and 20 mm wider tire tread that enables more lateral grip and aids flat handling. The Agile Handling Assist is present for the first time and with the help of the VSA4 system, it applies the brake of the front inside wheel while entering a corner, thus greatly improving cornering stability and precision. Multi-link independent rear suspension, large stabilizer bars with bonded bushing, rigid rear damper brackets and dual-pinion electric power steering also contribute to the improved handling and ride quality.

The 2016 Civic Sedan for the U.S. market will be produced at Honda’s plants in Greensburg, Indiana and Alliston in Ontario, Canada using domestic and globally sourced parts. Its two new engines will be produced in Anna, Ohio which is the largest automobile engine plant in Honda’s global production network.

  1. Every exterior styling fad/gimmick applied to this new iteration, makes it quite juvenile in appearance. At least the dash looks okay.

The reduction of air leaks should make it bearable on the freeway, but it will still be a long ways from a stone quiet ride. And, CVT’s , though, efficient, are far from a fun means of torque delivery and both of those engines deserve a manual.
