The seventh generation Hyundai Sonata has received its first model year update. The 2016 Hyundai Sonata brings new features, upgraded suspension and some styling revisions.
It will be available in five trim levels – SE, Sport, Limited, Eco and Sport 2.0T, with the Limited trim now featuring the 3-bar grille and aggressive bumper design from the Sport trim. The Limited trim level features a new 17-inch alloy wheel design on the exterior and and a beige colour scheme option with upgraded woodgrain inserts inside the cabin.
The comfort & convenience ugrades include a new 7-inch colour touchscreen audio system integrating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration technologies along with a rearview camera. The Sport trim is now offered with a conventional sunroof as an option, while it is standard on the Limited trim level. The Sonata Limited 2.0T will add a D-cut steering wheel with heating function.
To further enhance appeal, the 2016 Sonata is offered with a panoramic sunroof, 10-speaker Infinity 400-watt audio system with subwoofer and HID Xenon headlamps as optional extras. In a move to simplify the line-up, Hyundai has discontinued the brown leather interior and black leather interior with orange accents along with Urban Sunset exterior paint scheme.
Hyundai has also made changes to the suspension components which now feature aluminium construction instead of the regular steel to improve handling and unsprung weight. The lower and upper control arms in the front and assist arms at the back as well as the steering knuckle also feature aluminium construction.
Standard safety equipment include Traction Control System, Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Brake Assist and seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag.
The 2016 Sonata will also be offered with optional safety and assistance features like Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Rear Cross-traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, Smart Cruise Control.
The 2016 Hyundai Sonata carries forward its four-cylinder engine line-up from the previous version. The SE, Limited and Sport trims are powered by a 2.4-liter Theta II GDI engine that produces 185 hp and 178 lb.-ft. (241 Nm) of torque. The Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T trims are powered by a 2.0-liter Theta II turbocharged GDI engine that churns out 245 hp and 260 lb.-ft. (352 Nm) of torque. Both the engines will be mated to a 6-speed SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission.
The Eco trim level features a 1.6-liter turbocharged Gamma engine that develops 177 hp and (195 lb.-ft.) 264 Nm of torque mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and features an EPA fuel efficiency rating of 28 mpg (11.9 km/l) in the city and 38 mpg (16.1 km/l) on the highway and a class-leading figure of 32 mpg (13.6 km/l) in a combined cycle.
The 2016 Hyundai Sonata is priced from US$21,750 (excluding US$835 freight charge) and is now arriving at the dealerships.
