The Mitsubishi Mirage won’t be updated for MY2016, says a new report from Car And Driver. However, this unusually won’t lead to the model getting an axed. While model year updates usually lead to the model getting dropped from the line-up, the Mirage will get some comprehensive updates for 2017 model year.
Come Spring 2016, Mitsubishi will announce a significantly changed Mirage with powertrain and chassis updates, as per the report. It will go on sale in the U.S. market for MY2017. The 2017 Mirage hatchback’s arrival will coincide with the debut of the Mirage four-door sedan version. Like the hatchback, the sedan will also be imported from the company’s plant in Laem Chabang, Thailand.
The 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage is available in two trim levels ‘DE’ and ‘ES’ in the U.S. market. A 1.2-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine is standard and it produces 74 hp and 74 lb.-ft. (100 Nm) of torque. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed transmission and there’s no option for an automatic transmission.
The 4-door Mirage sedan that will go on sale for MY2017 should also be powered by the same engine and have the same transmission options as the updated MY2017 Mirage hatchback. The company could introduce 6-speed manual and/or an automatic transmission on both the sub-compact models for MY2017.
